BITBUCKET CLOUD ACCOUNT GUIDE

How to enable 2FA on Bitbucket Cloud

Bitbucket Cloud has its own two-step verification setting, separate from the one on your Atlassian account. Enable it for the Bitbucket account that owns or accesses your repositories.

Prepare your Bitbucket account

Before starting, confirm your account email, make sure you have an Atlassian account password, and add an SSH key to Bitbucket as its setup instructions require.

  1. Open the settings cog and select Personal Bitbucket settings.
  2. Under Security, open Two-step verification.
  3. Confirm your password and choose Set up.

Add Bitbucket to Sign In

You can use Sign In, our authenticator app for codes on your iPhone.

  1. With the setup QR code on another screen, open Sign In and tap Add → Scan QR Code.
  2. Scan the code, review the account details, and tap Add Account.
  3. Enter the current verification code in Bitbucket and finish enrollment. Save the recovery codes it supplies.

Bitbucket displays Account and Key details for manual enrollment. In Sign In, choose Add → Enter Setup Key, set Service to Bitbucket and Account to your account name, paste the secret into Key, then tap Add Account. Keep this key private.

Keep recovery access

Store your recovery codes securely outside your phone. Keep unused codes available before changing devices or generating another set; Bitbucket may require recovery-code verification for those changes.

If you lose your phone, follow the recovery option on the sign-in screen. Atlassian cannot simply turn off this setting for you, so prepare recovery access while you can still sign in.

Check the right two-step setting

Enabling two-step verification for an Atlassian account does not enable Bitbucket’s separate setting. A workspace may require Bitbucket two-step verification before allowing access to private content.

If a code does not work

Make sure the Bitbucket entry in Sign In matches the account you are using. Wait for a fresh code, then enter it before it changes. If fresh codes keep failing, check that your iPhone uses automatic date and time.

Keep a working sign-in session and your recovery information available while resolving the problem. Adding an entry to Sign In does not finish enrollment: the service must accept a code and confirm activation.
